Long Range Planning

The Red River Diversion project, to be completed in 2028, will limit Fargo’s physical footprint, and will have a significant impact on the City’s future. Growth has historically helped to sustain the City financially. The limited footprint will require leadership with innovative and forward thinking to ensure the City continues to prosper and thrive for generations to come. Preston has extensive experience with the City’s Planning and Development department. She was instrumental in developing the City of Fargo’s Growth Plan which will be followed by revisions in the City’s land development code, positioning Fargo as a top choice community.

Thriving Neighborhoods

As our city grows and neighborhoods change, our seniors, young families, and students need more affordable, safe housing options and property tax relief. We also need to uplift the historic and unique character of each neighborhood. Because of my extensive experience in planning and development on the Fargo City Commission, I know how to strategically design and implement neighborhood plans with attainable housing options that preserve the past and prepare for the future.

The Core Neighborhood Plan, which outlines a strategic approach for the decision-making and redevelopment of Fargo’s core neighborhoods, was completed in 2020. I secured the funding needed to start implementing the plan. The City has spent too much money on plans that still sit on shelves. As your Commissioner, I will continue to work ensuring the City will not waste taxpayer money on plans that its leaders lack the vision and skill to make a reality.

Housing Needs Study: With my initiative, Metro COG, and the City of Fargo, have completed a metro-wider housing study. Results showed increasing difficulties in residents’ getting access to housing, a core human right. The City must now develop policies and incentives that align with the gaps between and I am committed to getting that done.

Property Tax Exemptions: As your Commissioner, I will revise property tax exemptions to better meet the needs and goals of Fargo residents. The current process gives developers, landlords, and the wealthy too much access and influence.

Inclusive Community

Fargo has become increasingly diverse over the past years. New Fargoans bring a world perspective and enrich our community. Our businesses need a strong workforce, and we all benefit from growth and diversity. I will continue to work to ensure everyone has access to opportunities so all families can thrive.

Responsive Government

City Government must be responsive and transparent. Communication between the public and their elected officials is the first step. There is no consistent method to ensure the public's concerns are responded to on a timely basis. When a multi-department issue is brought to our attention by a constituent, there is no central coordinating person they can go to for direction or resolution. As your Commissioner, I will designate a central person to process your input, requests, and direct you to the right person to address your concern. The public's access to information and the City's responsiveness will improve, and problems will be solved more efficiently.
